The Special Education Programme at the University of Karachi
is principally a human resource development activity, geared
to producing professionally qualified manpower urgently
needed for the promotion and development of special education
in the country.
The programme was activated at the end of 1988 with a masters
programme in special education to train teachers for special
children. Since then the programme is running with reasonable
success and has produced five batches of professionally
trained graduates with a masters degree. The graduates are
being absorbed, principally, in the institutions of Karachi
and the feedback received, indicates, that their presence
is responsive to a felt demand and slowly but steadily they
have started the process of fulfilling the need for trained
personnel in the field.
